Since 2007 Maratea has been gaining The Blue Flag and now it is confirmed again together with other four places in Basilicata: Bernalda, Nova Siri, Pisticci e Policoro.

This recognition highlights how much Basilicata cares about protection of coast line and sea world, offering to tourists high quality services.

The Blue Flag

The Blue Flag is an international recognition set up by FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education) and since 1987 it has been honouring the best 50 beaches all over the world. It’s a real ecolabel, a brand for ecological quality and a guarantee for sustainability.

Which are the standards to be respected to gain the special flag?

They are a lot and always updated and for more are established by FEE, the leader of environmental education which cooperates with two important agencies of ONU: the first one is UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and the latter is UNWTO (United Nations World Tourism Organization).

You should have no waste water in the area of the beach, toilets and sanitary facilities should always be clean; obviously you should consider chemical and physical values of the beach, the conditions of sea habitat (sometimes lake ones), waste management and even green areas and the services offered by municipality such as sustainable transportation, hotels and proposals about environmental education.

You pay attention even to services and accesses for differently-abled people, to the presence of springs of drinking water, safety measures for swimmers; so nothing is improvised and the priority is the respect for environment.

Obviously Lucanians are proud of this recognition. As the president of Region Vito Bardi said, these five Blue Flags certify and declare the value and the quality of tourism in Basilicata which aims for higher and higher purposes to strengthen tourism and work.

Maratea is the main character in discovering again Basilicata, a region which finally everyone can admire: not only for the reconfirmation of the Blue Flag but even for articles on magazines such as Forbes and Vogue and the breathtaking scenes in No Time to Die, the last 007’ movie.

It’s the right time to talk about the Pearl of The Tyrrhenian sea.
